war no more - violin, cello
Instrumentation:
violin, cello
Duration:
3 min
Year:
2014
Program Notes:
war no more starts with a barrage of cacophony and physical violence as the players use extreme bow pressure to generate a hail of grating noise. Sirens approach, pass, and fade into the distance. A quiet hymn begins, struggling to realize its tune.
This piece was commissioned as part of Network for New Music’s Caffeinated Composer Project 2014. Composers were given existing pieces to use as a source of inspiration and I selected Down by the Riverside (trad.). We then had 48 hours to write a new piece. war no more was started at 6 PM on January 24, 2014, and completed at 4 PM on January 26, 2014. A total of seven large cups of coffee were consumed during the writing process.
