Program Notes:
The work that is now fragmented fixations went through at least a dozen different starting attempts at putting my ideas down on paper. I would work for hours with an idea before realizing that I didn’t like it in the first place. This process was made even more frustrating by my mind’s habit of playing snippets from the standard repertoire on repeat whenever my own creative spirit faltered. Eventually, I gave in to the temptation to borrow fragmented ideas from these famous works. Using kernels of another composer’s idea allowed me to begin the process of playing with the material, and the piece easily flowed from there.
fragmented fixations was commissioned by The Walden School, and premiered by members of Dal Niente.
