Piano Quintet

I’ve always loved the unspoken communication that takes place when playing chamber music, and I think that is the most fundamental difference between chamber and orchestral music. Being attuned to the other players in such an intimate way creates musical moments that can never be replicated at the scale of a large ensemble. This new piano quintet will be a celebration of that intimacy and will be written with those special chamber music moments at its core.

Inspiration for this piece is coming directly from these three words: thaw, trickle, flood. Words that can apply to our natural world and the effects of climate change, to our own experiences with buried emotions, and to our world as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic. They are vague yet vivid.

The new work will be between 20-25 minutes in length, three movements long, and be suitable to occupy a substantial spot on a program. This duration will be narrowed down based on the needs of the consortium members. Please note there may be extended techniques in this piece; however, there will be no electronics or prepared piano.

Timeline

Nov. 1, 2021 - Deadline to become a consortium member, deposit due

April 4, 2022 - First draft of the work submitted to the consortium members for feedback

June 1, 2022 - Full draft submitted to the consortium for last round of feedback

July 1, 2022 - Piece delivered to the consortium, second payment due upon delivery

Consortium Levels

Composer as Pianist Consortium Member - $800

  • The composer will be a guest artist and serve as the pianist for your performance(s). This includes any rehearsal time, as well as a pre/post concert talk with the composer for your audience. Additional travel fees may apply if your concert is outside of the New England or Mid-Atlantic areas.

  • Exclusive performance rights for one year from the delivery of the piece

  • Regular drafts, updates, and communication during the compositional process

  • Named as a commissioner on the score
